Innovation and social entrepreneurs

August 12th, 2008 by Bruce Lowry

The Global X interview this week over on Social Edge is with Tim Brown of IDEO.  IDEO’s done great work on design, including on Skoll Social Entrepreneur KickStart’s hand operated pumps.  Tim makes an observation that, interestingly, is paralleled by Steve Hamm of BusinessWeek.   Per Tim, “By trying to serve those who have the most needs, you can end up being truly innovative, to a point where those innovations have relevance not only in the developing world, but in the developed world also.”   Steve, who recently completed a 24-day trip around the globe to study social entrepreneurs, talks about innovation in a similar vein: “Innovation happens when people with open minds confront and overcome problems that have confounded others before them. That certainly describes the social-business phenomenon. So it’s no surprise that I would find so much innovation happening there.”

Great minds think alike….
