India has reached a stage where it now requires two Indias to meet the resource and waste absorption requirements of its citizens, according to new research from Global Footprint Network, a 2007 recipient of the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship. While the ecological footprint in India is low on a per capita basis, the large population pushes its total biocapacity needs to third in the world, behind only the U.S. and China. The study, prepared in conjunction with the Confederation of Indian Industry, indicates that the amount of productive land and sea area required to produce the resources India consumes and absorb its waste has doubled since 1961.
